Gear Pump

Gear Pumps are used to pump oil and other fluids by utilizing the meshing parts of gears (cogwheels).

A fixed amount of fluid is discharged per gear revolution. The discharge rate does not change much as the pressure rises, and the pump features good metering performance.

When used, the shaft end (shaft) of the Gear Pump is connected to a prime mover such as an engine or electric motor. The power of the prime mover drives the gears to push the fluid out.

One feature of the Gear Pump that is not found in other rotary positive displacement pumps is the structural advantage of being able to switch between forward and reverse rotation to change the suction and discharge directions. Some products can switch between forward and reverse rotation, which is useful when switching directions when transferring fluids.

External And Internal Gear Pump

Some of the advantages of gear pumps are listed below

01/

High Accuracy
Gear pumps offer precise metering of liquids or viscous materials because the gears mesh closely and deliver a well-defined volume per revolution.

02/

Low Pulsation
Gear pumps typically produce a uniform and low level of pulsation in the fluid flow, which is important in applications involving delicate instruments or equipment.

03/

Versatility
They can be used for a wide range of fluids and viscous materials, including chemicals, oils, lubricants, paints, adhesives and more.

04/

Reliability
Gear pumps are typically reliable and have a long service life. They require less maintenance and have low downtime.

05/

Easy Maintenance
Gear pump maintenance is often straightforward because they have fewer moving parts and are easily accessible.

06/

Efficiency
Gear pumps are usually energy efficient, achieving high metering rates with low energy consumption.

07/

Good Self-priming
They can prime fluids from low levels or against a slight vacuum, which is useful in some applications.

08/

Low Maintenance Costs
Because of their reliability and low need for spare parts, long-term maintenance costs are often low.

09/

Adaptability
They can be adapted for various applications and environments, including high-temperature and high-pressure applications.

10/

Compact Design
Gear pumps often have a compact design and can be installed in limited space.

Types of Gear Pumps

Circumscribed Gear Pump

Two external gears are mounted next to each other inside the pump. When a prime mover such as an engine or an electric motor operates, the shaft of the pump rotates to take in fluid from the pump suction port.

Internal Gear Pump

One internal gear and one external gear are mounted inside the casing inside the pump. The internal contact type consists of an internal gear and an external gear with one less tooth. When the external gear is rotated by the drive shaft, the external gear rotates along with the internal gear. This rotation pushes the fluid out through the discharge port.

How Do Gear Pumps Work?

A gear pump works by rotating two gears that suck in liquid and pump it continuously and evenly. Thanks to their simple construction and high reliability, they are ideal for applications requiring precision and repeatability.
There are two basic designs, internal or external. Internal gear pumps are typically designed with a gear within a gear, with both rotating the same way with the outer gear driving the inner (or idler) gear. External gear pumps feature two gears of the same size, rotating opposite of each other pushing the liquid to either side before joining back up at the output.

Gear come out of mesh, creating expanding volume on the inlet side of the pump. Liquid flows into the cavity and is trapped by the rotating gear teeth.

Liquid travels around the interior of the casing in the pockets between the teeth and the casing – it does not pass between the gears.

Finally, the meshing of the gears forces liquid through the outlet port under pressure.

Designs Available

There are various customisations available for units which include:

Flanges

Inlet and outlet can be manufactured as inline or at 90° angles to match pipework.

Single Jacket

A heating jacket is fitted on one part of the casing to prevent solidification of viscous fluids being pumped or to maintain a fluids viscosity. Example fluids are Chocolate, Bitumen, molasses and Heavy Fuel Oil.Single Jacketed Design The same ports can be used to function as a cooling jacket ensuring the liquid being pumped maintains its temperature or kept cool. On some designs this feature can mean a relief valve can not be fitted. Fluids which can be used for jackets are oil, steam, and water. Electricity can also be used.

Double Jacketed

Heating or cooling jacket is fitted on both sides of the pump casing. On some designs this feature can mean a relief valve can not be fitted.

Relief Valve

A relief valve to prevent the pump from over pressurising, relieving pressure to the inlet.

Seal Types

The Seal types used within the various different designs of pumps are a single mechanical seal, double mechanical seal, gland packing/stuffing or magnetic coupling where no seal is present.

Blind Cover

A blank cover on the face of the pump.

FAQ

Q: Can a gear pump be used for water?

A: Units rely on fluids with lubricating properties such as oils, fats, paint etc. As water does not lubricate, gear pumps should not be used with water.

Q: Can a gear pump cavitate?

A: Cavitation is possible in all types of pump. Whilst it may seem rare in gear pumps due to them often being ran at slow speeds, it is still possible due to insufficient suction pressure.

Q: Are gear pumps reversible?

A: Yes they are however any bypass valve fitted will only operate in one direction.

Q: Are gear pumps self priming?

A: Yes, Gear Pumps can self prime up to around 8M

Q: What viscosity can gear pumps handle?

A: Figures vary by model but they can handle fluids up to around 55,000cst.
